While boilers are complex systems that should only be serviced by licensed professionals, there are a few simple maintenance tasks you can safely perform to keep your system running smoothly between professional visits:

✅ 1. Check the System Pressure

Look at your boiler’s pressure gauge — it should typically read between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when the system is cool.If it’s too low, you can usually top it up using the filling loop (refer to your boiler’s manual).⚠️ Never over-pressurize or open sealed components — if unsure, stop and call a pro.

2. Bleed Your Radiators

If some radiators feel cold at the top but warm at the bottom, trapped air may be the cause.Use a radiator key to gently bleed the air out — keep a cloth handy to catch any drips. This helps your boiler circulate heat more evenly and improves efficiency.

3. Keep the Area Around the Boiler Clear

Make sure there’s at least 12–18 inches of clearance around your boiler for ventilation and access.Avoid storing cleaning products, boxes, or rags nearby — these can restrict airflow or pose safety risks.

4. Inspect for Obvious Leaks or Corrosion

A quick visual check for drips, rust spots, or discoloration on pipes can alert you early to problems before they escalate. If you notice any moisture, corrosion, or greenish staining on fittings, contact a professional right away.

5. Test the Thermostat and Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Test your thermostat for accuracy and make sure your carbon monoxide (CO) detector is working — this is crucial for safety, especially during the heating season.

🚫 When to Call a Professional

Some issues require specialized tools, gas licensing, and combustion analysis — these are not DIY jobs. Call a certified technician immediately if you experience:

  • ⚠️ No heat or hot water

  • ⚠️ Low or fluctuating boiler pressure

  • ⚠️ Strange noises like banging, knocking, or “kettling”

  • ⚠️ Error codes or flashing lights on the display

  • ⚠️ Persistent leaks, rust, or water pooling

  • ⚠️ Yellow or orange pilot flame instead of steady blue

  • ⚠️ Any gas or burning smell

These can indicate serious issues such as combustion failure, pump damage, or gas leaks that must be addressed by a licensed TSSA-certified professional.
