Common Winter Heating Problems and How We Fix Them

As temperatures drop across York Region more homeowners are calling about no heat or gas issues. Most of these problems come down to a few common causes that are easy to prevent with proper maintenance and professional diagnostics.

1. Dirty Filters and Weak Ignition

When air filters get clogged airflow drops and the furnace overheats. That triggers safety switches and causes short cycling or complete shutdowns. Weak ignition is another issue we see daily. It often happens from buildup on the flame sensor or poor maintenance on the burner assembly.

Routine furnace service keeps ignition strong and airflow balanced and It also helps avoid costly breakdowns when you need heat most.

2. Failed Gas Tests and Red Tags from Enbridge

If your gas line fails a manometer test or you’ve been red-tagged by Enbridge, it means the system isn’t maintaining pressure safely. Only a licensed TSSA contractor can inspect, repair, and reconnect your gas service.

At Mazgan Inc., we handle the full process locating the leak or weak point, repairing it to code, pressure testing, and submitting the clearance form for Enbridge reconnection.

Never try to reconnect gas service on your own. It must be inspected and signed off for safety compliance.

3. Misdiagnosed Heating and Cooling Issues

We often see homeowners told their unit needs replacement when the real problem is a wrong reading. Faulty tools or inexperience lead to bad diagnostics.

Recently one customer was told their air conditioner was beyond repair. The actual issue was a damaged test fitting that gave a false pressure reading. Once checked properly, the unit ran perfectly.

Always get a second opinion before replacing major equipment. A skilled technician with the right tools can save you thousands.

4. Boiler Circulation and Air Issues

Many boiler service calls start with “my system is noisy” or “some rooms aren’t heating.” This usually means air is trapped in the loop. An air separator solves that by removing trapped air and keeping circulation steady. During a boiler tune-up, we also check pressure, pump amperage, and glycol levels to keep your hydronic system efficient and quiet.

Most heating issues are avoidable with simple maintenance. Replace your filters keep vents clear and schedule a professional check-up before the deep cold arrives.
